Controversial website nikahsirri.com has been shut down by Indonesian authorities. The website, named after the practice of marrying in a Muslim ceremony while not actually registering the marriage with the authorities, purportedly offers virgins for sale. On the front page it boldly advertised "Virgins Wanted. No experience necessary", and "Change illicit sex into religious devotion".

With such antics, one would think it was a parody website. However, the police determined that it was a serious "business" and has since shut it down and arrested the owner, Aris Wahyudi. The police are considering charges under several laws, including the Information and Technology, Pornography, Child Protection and Money Laundering laws.

Aris is said to take 20% of each "transaction" on the website, including virginity auction.

The police has found 2700 registered members, all male.

Was it for virgin boys and girls, it seems 2700 virgin boys applied

For those unaware, nikah siri is the practice to perform a Muslim religious marriage while avoiding to actually register the marriage with the proper authorities. The reason for not registering is that the marriage is obviously not legal. Usually the marriage can not be legalized because the groom already has a wife and does it without her permission, the marriage is not actually real (it's just a pretext to have sex, while maintaining a veneer of religious compliance), the bride is underage (child trafficking) and various other reasons, none of which are good.

Another word for nikah siri is "kawin kontrak" which translates into "contract marriage". This is notoriously used by wealthy Arabs who wish to have relations for a short time with Indonesian women.

The wife in a nikah siri marriage has none of the rights a legal wife has, and the children born out of such marriage have it even worse. They are deemed bastards, who are not able to inherit, get child support, and will have difficulties obtaining any type of civil paperwork. They will suffer from this stigma possible throughout their life.

A few years ago there was a draft to outlaw nikah siri. Unfortunately it remained a draft.

WHY?
Is it because you are offended as a practitioner... or as an advocator?

"Offended" is a loaded term in this era where political correctness has run amok. I won't speak for JM and dafluff, though I suspect their views resemble mine, but as a human being who isn't a fan of child trafficking or the subjugation of women, I'll say that jokes on the subject can be a bit distasteful.

I'm not offended exactly, but let's just say I tend to have a higher opinion of people who take these matters seriously than I do of people who think they are amusing.

I think that many people with some sense of respect for the victims of this website, many being underaged, would feel offended by flippant remarks.
The owner of the website, Aris Wayhudi, is indicted with the Pornografi Law but also with the Child Protection act. Kids as young as 14 have had their virginity auctioned on the site.

I may be flippant, but I do find the whole thing pretty awful, but you have to see the funny and pathetic side that the only applicants were 2700 sad men, it would appear perhaps the Indonesian virgins had more sense than the men,
One of the things I hate most is these rich asians coming to Sukabumi marrying poor and ignorant young girls and when they have finished with them they did off back to where ever they came from, anyway let's hope we aren't going to have a PC site or if some feel offended perhaps move this thread to the cage

I realize the idea of using the internet to offer Nikah Siri is new but the actual practice has been going on in Indonesia for many years...I recall being 'offended' when I first heard about it over 40 years ago.
Many participants are in the business of offering this service so can hardly be called victims. I've even read that some of those underage were offered by the parents.
There is a big business in the practice, particularly in Puncak, which I see as a hypocrisy......and I like to make fun of anything I find hypocritical.

I suggest those who are so sensitive should complain where it might make a difference...I doubt anyone reading this forum has the authority to do much.

So if the parents offer up the children, the children aren't really victims?

That's being pedantic...if you have a concern those parents are culpable of the crime of victimising their children I suggest you report them to the correct authorities.

Let's try a thought experiment: If the website that was shut down offered underage girls to be sold in your country, would anyone comment "Damn, I was saving up!"?

You didn't answer my question: so, you don't think those children are victims?

The fact that I can't "save" those kids doesn't change how I feel about what is being done to them. I do my best to be a good citizen, give money/volunteer for causes I believe in, and speak up when I think a wrong is being perpetrated. But I can't save everyone in the world or right every wrong. That doesn't mean I agree no wrong has been done.

Again: are these children victims, or not?

Pedantically.....they are victims of their parents lack of care and attention and the Indonesian system of permitting Nikah Siri. There's nothing new here.

@Anglian, @Davita and anyone who feels concerned.

This forum is not becoming PC or too serious, far from it. No infraction was given, nor any warning and none will be given (as long as everyone remains civil of course).

It's just that there are 2 sides to every coin. So just as you have a right to joke about this topic if you choose to, others also have a right to say that they don't find it funny or find it distasteful.

I know it may look as if mods are piling on, but I assure you this is not the case. Mods aren't around just to doll out infractions and ban people. We're also here to help steer the conversation when we feel it is a bit too one sided. And also to voice our own opinions.

It's important that all opinions have a space to be voiced and we're here to ensure that too.

With that said, please carry on :).
With such antics, one would think it was a parody website.
and the website has been shutdown.

If you are not Indonesian and don't pay taxes, or even if you do, you are a visitor to Indonesia and as such cannot influence the laws or behavior of the citizenry.

Being all offended and feigning moral or cultural superiority does not change anything nor will it.

I took the OP as being ridiculous that such a website should exist in the first place. Is it right no but there is very little or almost nothing anyone on this forum can do about it.
