I need some new ones and remember that they were significantly cheaper in Indo than Thailand. So it may be better to wait until I get there?
It's not really the money it is the "Made In Germany" Thai-style rip off. Here would be about $700. For progressive, self tinting.
No I am not buying then on-line.

Depends on the frame, lens quality and prescription. $700 would be in the high end here for progressive, self tinting.

£1 a pair from Poundsaver in UK :)
But I only need them to see small print nowadays.
I used to pay a small fortune for "proper" glasses before I had my eyes lasered.

As dafluff says the difference in cost will be in what type of frames you want.
I'd say the top-end for spectacles to be around US$500.
I use Silhouette frames (made in Austria) with progressive, photo-chromatic and non-glare lens and they cost around US$425. One leg snapped when I slept in them but it was repaired for under $20.
The problem with photo-chromatic is it deteriorates in time (a couple of years) and starts to look speckled. Not really a problem for me as that's normally time to replace the lens using the same frames. I have two pair and keep the older as a spare until after an eye-test.... then have them replace the lens and keep the current one as spare.

I have quite a large cilinder and therefore usually go with slightly thinner glasses to avoid walking around with jars on my face, I usually go with the carl-zeiss glasses with some anti-glare layer as the difference with house-brand is quite minimal, although I have tried house-brand and found no significant difference.

Currently on a Jaguar frame which was 3,5jt all-in, got a Tag Heuer frame as well that was 8jt all-in.

Ciputra Eye Clinic has been doing all sorts of promotions for LASIK at 25jt for 2 eyes, been considering that lately.

My only regret re LASIK was why didn't I do this sooner. Obviously, as I have aged my eyesight is not as good as it was for a few years after the op. I used to be able to read the smallest print more or less on the end of my nose, pre LASIK & I kinda miss that. Hence the cheapo reading glasses.

oh & yes, get both eyes done at the same time, if you go for it as the improvement is instant- the downside that they don't quite say enough about is that for a few days it will feel as though you have the worst head cold ever- eyes & nose streaming- bulk buy tissues- they told me to go home & have a nap post op... hahaha I tried, but the waterworks prevented it.

Less than a million - photochromic for myopia and astigmatism.
No idea where you lot are being overcharged but, if you'd be so kind, post the address so I know not to go there.

Are you referring to the glass lenses or the designer frames?

And yes Fred no offence we all know that where you live everything is cheaper than free, but it's 27 hours away by 14 different trains and a donkey ride

i payed around Rp400.000~Rp600.000 for my daily reading glasses just to get the jobs done and around Rp2000.000ish for Nikon set because i like the design and its super light weight.
but i am saving money for LASIK treatment.

Cheers all. Just on principle I'll get a cheapo basic pair here so i can function and some real ones where i get there. Photocromatic, progressive here etc will be about 9Jt
I get mad because they give us the Made in Germany BS even when Thailand is a large grinder of lenses. A Brit friend says his glasses bought in a store called Boots and made in Thailand.
As the Singaporeans say "Don't Thai to me"

I hope I haven't confused anyone by saying in my post # 4 that my Silhouette are made in Austria. The lenses to all the glasses I've had made in Indonesia were all ground to my prescription in Indonesia. I have no idea where the original lenses are manufactured and I only meant the frames came from Austria.

I could care less where the frames are made.

I get decent glasses, with progressive lenses in Jakarta for 700k or so. Before progressive lenses, I paid 300-400k, and they were ready in 30-60 minutes. Now they have to send them to me a week or so later.

Prices in Bandung are quite a bit higher.

Absolutely.

The Luxottica Group, based in Milan, Italy, controls more than 80 percent of the world’s major eyewear brands. All made in China.

Luxottica has acquired many famous eyewear brands, including the most popular American brands. Luxottica produces among its most well-known brands, Ray-Ban, Persol, and Oakley and makes a multitude of designer brands such as Chanel, Prada, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Burberry, Versace, Dolce and Gabbana, Donna Karan, Stella McCartney, and Tory Burch.

I bought a pair of this Korean brand OWL, made in Malaysia.

But in Western Europe prices are also under pressure; because of the tremendous competition in Holland for instance, you get a 2[sup]nd[/sup] and even a 3[sup]rd[/sup] pair for free.

my progressives with the self tinting feature were around 1,5 million in at Melawai(?) Had to wait a week till they came from Jakarta.
Still spend more time looking FOR them rather than THROUGH them

Ok here a hint if you must buy designer eye glass frames , order them from a real distributor. You can do this online just make sure they are licenced from the designer. If you buy them from a optical shop it's 80 percent chance they aren' real which can be fine. If you are buying knock offs buy 2 of the same frames if they are cheap enough.

Most important is the lens blanks not who does the grinding. Good blanks will have the company' named later etch on the side. It' a world of differene between good blanks such as Bausch and Lomb, and some other company.
The problem with photo-chromatic is it deteriorates in time (a couple of years) and starts to look speckled.
This won' happen with good blanks ,it happens with cheap blanks that are coated opposed to the blank being infused.
Spend the money on the lens not the frames and most people don' reaize you can have lens recut for new frames as long as the surface area is large enough.
You can get great glasses for less then 2 jt

Good idea. It's like buying a sound system. Spend 50% of one's budget on the speakers.

i have just bought 2 glasses for good price in Mangga dua (not cheap, but good deal) . what I like buying glasses in manga dua is, I can choose the original or the fake one based on my budget
