What else, Rats again

so put ½ a brick over the waste

My neighbour Rick had a snake in his bathroom. Same. Came in through the open floor drain. My "motel room" was the same so ( there being no covers locally available) I bought a cheap toilet brush with a threaded in handle,

stuck it into the drain and unscrewed the handle. Unobtrusive, water drains away as normal and easy to reinstall the handle and pull it out for cleaning.

Sure rats could chew it but if they do it will be very obvious.

shimmying on telephone / electricity cables is not unheard of. We once had a snake trying that exact thing- it fell off halfway across the road- but nontheless made me wary.
Moving upstairs probably would have been on the cards if we were not now sure how the snakes got in, there's nowhere else they could possibly get in unless they just slithered on thru an open door in broad daylight which was highly unlikely especially with the dog hanging around.

Aside from locking grates on waste water drains, it's another good reason for incorporating water traps in drain pipes when building.

Shimmying across aerial cables would be to gain access to the roof cavity where rats tend to hang out, snakes are great vermin controllers. I've seen snake crap the size of dog crap inside roofs & this reminds me of a work colleague who was inside a roof & saw a harmless Brown Tree snake otherwise known as “Night Tiger” or “Doll's Eye”. Well, ol' mate completely shit himself & in his panic to exit the roof cavity belted his head on a rafter & ended up in the local hospital for a few stitches.

Snakes in the attic are good, but need better PR agents to tout their usefulness.

Added to my last post I would think that snakes shimmying across aerial cables is not a learned habit with the deliberate intention of gaining access to a building but rather that the snake is attempting to follow the scent of vermin.

I remember the first time I saw ½ a small Aqua bottle attached mid – span to an aerial electricity cable which ran from the main building to the detached kitchen of a Balinese house & upon inquiry as to it's purpose was informed that it was to put rats off balance & make them fall from the wire as they tried to gain access to the kitchen.

We had several baby cobras in the garden and house, I have written about them before so won’t repeat, but they were very effective at getting rid of rats, they kept well out of our way, although for safety we collected them up, and took the to the zoo, they did get a bit cross about that and spat at us

Ok, let me be the one: "wow that was very rude of the staff to spit at you, what else were you supposed to do with the snakes"
