Mobil Rakyat...new cars

It is very probable there will be a completely new model by then, they are already testing the 5th generation of the Santa Fe.

The weird thing is that the previous 2020 facelift included a completely new platform. Which was optimized for (plug in) hybrid solutions. So that might stay the same now.

What I know, Santa Fe and Kia Sorento is also available with PHEV with electric range is 60 km.
I hope with the tax rebate/incentive, the PHEV version of Santa Fe (as well as other 7 Seater SUV) will be entered to Indonesia in 2024.
I heard, Peugeot will launch the pure EV 3008 and 5008 and possibly PHEV too this year. No detail available, but the hybrid option is expected to be a more affordable alternative to the already available plug-in hybrid models. Let see. I will still look if the price difference is less than 10% assuming the similar or better performance to Korean or Japan competitor.
The Mitsubishi Outlander is also interesting. I will certainly look this car as well as other 7 seaters PHEV SUV available in Indonesia market in 2024. Still one year from now.
In fact, if the LIFEPO4 battery pack is more affordable for off-grid house; I will look the pure EV too. So, total green energy for my retirement hut in Bali.

Talking about larger SUV’s with three rows and potentially plug-in hybrid (PHEV) solutions:

Mazda is renewing their bigger cars and is currently introducing four (4!) new models in the (D/E) mid- & full-size crossover SUV classes.

For Europe there will be a CX-60 and CX-80. These are not coming to the US market where Mazda will eventually add the CX-70 to its range, which currently contains the CX-90.

So CX-60 + CX-80 or CX-70 + CX-90.

In Indonesia (and Australia which gets the CX-60) it’s not very clear yet which models Mazda will introduce. Currently over here Mazda offers the CX-8 and CX-9 which doesn’t make a lot of sense, but okay. So in time both will be replaced.

Besides the CX-5 (which will be renewed soon) and the Mazda 2 you don’t see many cars of this brand on the Indonesian roads. Something like that affects the resale value.

The ‘problem’ is that the current CR-V here will be the old/previous CR-V in no time.

If I read your (and your wife’s) demands, it seems a 7-seater is not absolutely necessary, right? Then a Creta is definitely not a bad choice (although I think the rear is ‘butt’ ugly). But why not consider the (relatively new) HR-V with CVT? I have driven one and was rather impressed, esp. with the interior quality. Prices start at 375 juta.

And if you want to go somewhat cheaper, the new BR-V. This ‘Car of the year 2022’ looks much better than its predecessor, is spacious, a Honda (happy wife happy life) and available for 312 juta with a CVT. It beats the Xpander/Livina combo which are not bad cars. A Creta in an automatic version, what Hyundai calls IVT, is already 333 juta for the Trend version.

NB: The (small) Suzuki’s have the least issues and problems of all brands in Europe. Obviously they don’t sell the Ertiga or XL-7 there. If I had the spare cash I would take the Jimny now anytime. (It will become available in 5 doors also.)
Correct seven seater is not necessarily important, but that 375 juta is out of my range for sure.

If you are wiling to look at used and want a BR-V, I have one for a good price in the classified section. 42,000 km. We bought it new.
Yes...I saw that...just have to convince the 'passenger with authority' to consider other options except Creta or CRV...

If the 312 juta is a bit steep for the new BR-V (it really is very different from the cross version of the Mobilio it used to be), you could consider the Nissan Livina which is available for less than 290 juta for the automatic version. It‘s in fact a rebadged version of the Mitsubishi Xpander. I would not consider an Avanza but the Calya if the entrance and step height are perceived somewhat high. Even more profitable would be the Sigra that you can have for 170 juta for the automatic (see what I wrote about Daihatsu before).

Don't know why, I never paid attention to Mazda. Just checked it, seem the all-new 2024 CX-90 is quite impressive, matching a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with larger electric motor, and a configuration good for 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The biggest and most powerful in its class - even bigger than the Palisade; however the PHEV version is equipped with 17.8 kwh battery pack - a bit small for its size - can only reach 35 km range.
Let see if Mazda will bring the 2024 CX-90 PHEV to Indonesian market - more choice and more competition.

My brother in law bought a Mazda CX5. Check service prices before you commit to a Mazda (in Indonesia at least). Parts are also on the pricy side compared to other makes as well.

Sure, not only for Mazda; with tough competition they will make money from spare-part and services. Will also check the warranty, particularly for the battery pack and availability of service center in the area. I used to have Peugeots; Ford Everest and Opel Blazer in Indonesia. Their parts and service was not cheap too. Parts were not always available.

Question to those who maybe have tried both the older Xpander vs the newer one (2021 or newer). So I remember driving the 2018 once around the neigborhood block, and for sure the steering wheel felt too light, especially compared to my old Innova, which is actually prefer (sturdier and feels better driving in the toll). Even my niece (who just recently started driving) said the old Xpander feels really light. Wonder if there's a difference between the newer xpander and the cross as far as handling goes. I don't wanna go have a test drive at the dealership and having them take my info and started bombarding me with whatsapps, calls, etc.

Also the power steering on a recent Innova and Fortuner is rather ‘light’.
When I hear about ‘heavy steering’ in a 12 year old car, I immediately start to think about deferred maintenance with polluted or even not enough fluid, or using a wrong type of oil in the hydraulic system. Or even tires that are somewhat too soft or wheels that are misaligned. 🫣

Nowadays the power steering is most often electric and not hydraulic anymore. The advantage is that it is much easier to change the power assistance depending on the speed of the car. There is the possibility of a recalibration of the EPS and its working can be adjusted with a potentiometer.

My wife went to have some service done on our 10 year old Nissan Livina today at the dealer. She got the full attention of the salesman today, and now has new car love in her eyes. :)

Does anyone have performance info on the latest model Livina? Our garage has an elevator in it, so that we can take a wheelchair, and disabled folk up to the main floor. So the depth of parking is reduced by a little over a meter. So a very long vehicle isn’t going to work.

When we came back to Indonesia in May, I asked my wife if it wasn’t time to get a new vehicle. She didn’t seem interested, but has always looked at the new Innova‘s with admiration.

In the US we have an almost 6 year old Honda CRV, but it has safety and other features beyond most models in Indonesia.

The new Livina is just a rebaged Mitsubishi Expander with a few cosmetic part differences, so what is true for one will be the case with the other. The new Innova isn't small. It's like a Fortuner light.

In case of a wheelchair and issues getting in and out of the car, I would definitely consider an MPV with a sliding door as the Voxy. It’s not cheap though. Nissan and Mazda also have cars in this category.

The Innova and Fortuner are technically very similar. Both are rather high so you’d have to climb in.

Most cars which are built or assembled in Indonesia, don’t have very advanced (safety) features. Think a limited amount of airbags, drum brakes in the back, no turbo or hybrid, …. That’s also one of the reasons why the cars that are imported are so much more expensive.

But as my stingy father used to say: “What it doesn’t have and what is not there, cannot break.”

Livina is like an "estate" car (station wagon?)

There's another small Asian brand with a side sliding door but not big like alphard
I've had some on grab but forget the name

A Nissan Serena, perhaps?

Probably the Toyota Sienta. That one operates in the class of the Honda Freed.

It‘s a shame both disappeared from Indonesia, while they still exist in newer versions in other countries. Let’s hope they will return, the Toyota probably will but I’m not so sure about the Honda.

The Sienta disappeared from Toyota’s price lists, but is still sold

Obviously the question is whether you should buy one now, since this was very recently in the news:

Based on the official Industrial Design News document Number 33/D1/2022 released by the DJKI of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of Indonesia, the new Sienta design was registered with application number A00202202287 on July 13, 2022. Toyota Jidosha Kabushiki Kaisha is listed as the party submitting the application.

From the document, it can be seen that the design of the sliding door MPV is exactly the same as Sienta, which was launched in Japan in August last year. The new touch is clearly visible on the front grille which is more square with a slightly rounded body on several sides.

Anton Jimmi Suwandy, Marketing Director of PT Toyota Astra Motor, when asked about this, did not want to say much.

"I can't comment on future products," said Anton when contacted, Monday (30/1).
