Mobil Rakyat...new cars

Mazda has something called SkyActiv. In fact that's a series of measures that (should) increase fuel efficiency and engine output.

They are implementing a technique in the SKYACTIV 2 liter engine now that they call SPCCI. In fact it is an attempt to implement the holy grail in engines; to combine the advantages of diesel and gasoline engines. A best of both worlds if you will.

Gasoline engines work with sparks; that way the air and fuel mixture is ignited. In diesel, that is completely missing; the 'combustion' is achieved by compression. Of course there are disadvantages (e.g. possible overheating) that had to be addressed. But it's quite promising.

And hopefully more successful than the Wankel Engine.

I wonder if the front design is anticipating the arrival of cars as sentient beings as they have headlights looking like eyes and grilles that might bite. I guess soon, as we move to step off the footpath, a metallic voice from the new Mazda or whatever will say. "Step back to the footpath pedestrian or suffer the consequences."

Maybe off topic a bit but had a rough morning so wanted a mini rant.....Personally i wish Indonesian cars would up the in car experience considering how much time is spent inside the car rather than out. By this i mean the internal entertainment and control systems. Whenever i go to Europe or USA and hire a rental car im amazed by the full integration into a sort of smart control system. The cars have built in wifi, the touch screen controls can control so much etc etc.

Meanwhile im in a brand new way over priced Alphard (the middle version) and it doesnt even have USB plugs. It has a tiny wireless phone charging cradle built into a console but its sized to only fit the smallest of phones on the market. The internal screen system uses DVD (anyone still have any?) and claims to have a cast movie system but neither me not toyota can work it out. The drivers touch screen console is basically just a radio and doesnt even control any car functions like the parking sensors which are hard to switch on and off (i want them but in Jakarta traffic they cant end up like a siren).

I was in a friends BMW and same thing. Seems like Indonesia gets these sort of systems from 10 years ago versus other markets. I get they want to keep the price low (although it doesnt seem low) but you would think when spending so much on a car they would give some of the modern technology.

Good friend of mine bought Peugeot 5008, nice SUV, 7 seater. I had a chance to try. Despite small engine of 1.5 l, it is very responsive with good maneuver and handling.
Not cheap, cost him equal to Rp. 510m here in Egypt.

Still, he paid a good price compared with the 715 Juta they ask in Indonesia for the 3008.

Probably best to compare that 5008 to the Nissan X-Trail or CR-V. Those are more or less the only competitors besides some Koreans.

Peugeots are real good cars to drive yes, and even the higher crossovers don't behave boat-like. There's also a 1.2 version and I think that's really too light. In most countries you will find a 1.6 engine instead of the 1.5 (which exists because of tax reasons).

The 3008 is immensely popular in Europe, the 5008 not so much. (I guess there's not such a big demand for three row seven seaters there.) The Nissan and Honda mentioned, are also not doing that well, their smaller versions as Qashqai and HR-V are doing much better.

Still no news on the X-Trail upgrade btw.

With some imagination you could position another European car against the two Peugeots, namely the Volkswagen Tiguan. Which is the worldwide bestseller* of VW. There is also a Tiguan Allspace, which is somewhat bigger 7-seater (so a LWB) and which can be positioned against the 5008.

Besides the very conservative styling (and that's still an understatement) the car is not cheap in Indonesia; 650 Juta for a 1.4 liter version. Which is very expensive for what you get. Also, this version of the car exists since 2016 so it's time for a major facelift.

* Worldwide sales of 2018: 10. Chevrolet Silverado (651.000) 9. Toyota Camry (660.000) 8: VW Polo (725.463, + 11,3 %) 7: Honda CR-V (747.646) 6: VW Golf (789.519, - 10,3 %) 5: VW Tiguan (791.275, +8,6 %) 4: Honda Civic (823.169 ) 3: Toyota Rav4 (838.000, + 3,6 %). 2: Ford F-Series, > 1 million 1: Toyota Corolla (1,2 million, -1,7 %)

If you're in the market for a BMW SUV (so X series, and mainly the X2 through X4) you'd better wait a bit with ordering since they are revamping the whole gamut with better interiors and they will introduce many new options (as wheels, multimedia and colors). They call it the summer update so in a month or so you should be fine.

Not a car for the masses but if you liked the Celica Supra, the Tokyo Drift of the F&F franchise, or the GT86*, you might like this one too; the new Toyota Supra. A bit over the top.

Co developed with BMW (Z4) and purists are not so keen on that. The engine is from BMW (which could be a disadvantage), as well as the interior and materials used in there (which should be an advantage*).

* one of the main negatives (in reviews) of the GT86 is the interior quality. I’ve seen it and well, it is Toyota. (Even if built by Subaru.)

Next to the 3008, Peugeot sells another car in Indonesia, the 208.

I should say sold, because very recently the car magically disappeared from their website.

Not weird if you consider the sales price of 565 juta. But it probably has more to do with the fact there's a new model around the corner. (Autumn.)

This car definitely will be a big success in Europe, but here we know we probably will never see it on the road.

There is also an e-208 announced btw. And not as afterthought, that electric version will be sold right away. It will have a range of 340 km.
.

Yeah it got the family face and backside that you also see on the new Peugeot 508. Agressive front with saber teeth LED's and black light bar for instance.

Just some completely irrelevant omong-omong:

It seems half of the Audi e-Tron buyers select the virtual mirrors as option.

So the side mirror are replaced by cameras and little screens in the doors. Quite an expensive option, €1.800. Can you imagine in Jakarta traffic with the motorbikes hitting them?

I saw that e-Tron during my last visit btw and it was rather impressive; it's huge (2.500 kg) and at first I thought I was looking at the new Q8. Currently it outsells the Jaguar i-Pace.

This is the All New Grand Santa Fe from Hyundai, a three row 7 seater. Prices vary between 525 and 640 Juta. (Comparable to cheaper European countries.)

A bit of a mix between the Fortuner and Pajero Sport. What would turn me òff somewhat is the lack of something I learned to enjoy here; the dual independent ceiling blower. Just the vent in the middle at knee height and in the B-styles. But the third row does get an independent AC vent.

It is available in 2 engines, and also with a 8 speed automatic.

The addition Grand is reserved for the top model.

Talking about AC and dual blowers etc.:

For in the Avanza class I found that the new Suzuki Ertiga does a great job, and it has 4 vents on the second row.

The Toyota/Daihatsu twins Calya also are not bad, they come across as a bit cheap but work very well with the sliders.

Cars with Climate Control as the more expensive cars (Benz/BMW/RangeR) obviously should do a better job than AC but that's theory. In this climate you sometimes don't want refinement but raw power.

Lexus is a bit of an exception; their climate control is great.

Never underestimate AC in a tropical country.

At work in Sumarta when we were eventually offered a vehicle (sometime shared) we would go out to the three or so ancient Kijangs that where available, start the engines, turn on the AC and then have a quick wander around ignoring worn tires and tired batteries as they could be replaced quite easily in the village.
Then we would sit inside and see which one had the best AC and take that one.

After the Corolla, a real car for the masses is of course the Volkswagen Golf. It is the 7th generation of this car.

Now in most countries they offer 65+ variations of this model.

Here in Indonesia you can get, if you really push it, two.

And it has the 1.4 TSI engine which was canceled almost everywhere in 2017. (Now 1,5 and 1,6 TSI.) Its price is approx. 600 Juta.

Now there will be a new generation coming rather soon, the VIII. If you can see the difference you deserve a price.

This car will be a so called mild hybrid. It has a 48 Volt system that regenerates energy, something that the competition already offers for over a decade but let’s not be too negative. It will save a staggering 0,4 liter on every 100 km.

Now if you want a similar car, you might want to look at the Polo. Even if a bit boring, it has a rather interesting price between 265 and 320 Juta. Competes with a 208.

The VW Polo is as big as the Golf IV; it has grown as cabbage over the previous generations.

And with a 1.2 liter engine......eh wait a sec; the Polo should have a 1.0 liter engine?!

Oops, the Polo sold in Indonesia is the model that was replaced end of 2017!!! Just so you know..

Yes I know. But it is different.

What is really interesting and in my eyes beautiful about the new Polo though, is the dashboard with the digital area (it's a huge zone in fact) which includes the meters....

...nothing is analog so like in the much more expensive Audi's or Benz-es, you can have a another digital image as a full screen GPS there.

With the Ford Fiësta out of the picture and the 208 being renewed, it really is time VW introduces this version in RI.

The question is whether it can stand up against the Toyota Yaris and Honda Jazz. It does stand a chance if they can keep the price under 275 Juta. But that won't be easy.

That is one hideous car...

Very slick, does it integrate with Android Auto or Apple's version?

Not so easy to answer. I know the screen in the middle of the dashboard can be fed by Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. But in the meter section behind the steering wheel? Doesn’t look like it (it is their proprietary GPS in all ads and car models) and they don’t mention it.
