Always easy to ridiculize something to avoid going somewhat deeper.

I will just use your examples to try to point out that changes have occurred. The scrutiny is slowly expanding.

The gay who was flirting with you, won't communicate about his sexual orientation with family, colleagues, etc. Some friends we have don't dare to go to parties anymore since they are afraid of raids and humiliation while being arrested, and no way in hell they will tell others they're gay, they'd rather marry. The woman breastfeeding could have been a special case, no way people in their right minds would show their body parts in public, indecente exposure is not frowned upon, it is punishable by law. We have quite some acquaintances (neighbors, maids but even doctors) who won't touch members from the opposite sex anymore, not even a handshake. A huge amount of restaurants that we frequented have stopped serving alcohol, many more than in the past get blinds during Ramadan. People are called upon not to eat or drink in public during fasting, nowadays there are even governmental broadcasts. Sales of alcohol in small supermarkets has officially been abolished, in Central Java many big chains also don't sell anymore. Nobody in our neighborhood dares to complain in public (anymore) about the noise of the mosques, far too afraid to go to jail on blasphemy charges. Online prostitutes get more and more trapped and arrested, clubs have been raided with the focus on arrests of foreign girls, you see less and less Chinese and Eastern European girls when you go out in Kota.

Of course people will still do drugs, gamble, drink, whatever. Human nature.

Perhaps your part of town is different then mine. My experiences are mostly base on Jakarta and surrounding areas but by no means limited to the city folk. Just watch TV and see how many women wear modest clothes these days. Compared to 10 years ago, it's like the virgin girl from the village went wild in the city. The same issues 10 years ago as now concerning blasphemy and mosque noise.
