Google crazy.

Just wondering if you've had a look at your programs list & whether there is anything you haven't seen before or looks a bit suspicious, if there is, before you attempt to uninstall it, do a search on it to find out what it is & if possible, how to fully delete it.

My wife inadvertently clicked on a thing which popped up called Download Manager update which she thought was a part of windows & caused exactly the same dramas you are having with Google.

Download Manager is not a virus or malware & is okay for some versions of windows but plays complete havoc with others.

After me attempting to follow directions & delete files from here there & everywhere we decided to just get the thing reformatted.

Search all your files for Ozip and see if it comes up anywhere and gives you the location. It may just be something dumped into your program files in a folder with another name.

There are places you can go to toughen up like karate school or jujitsu. Any equivalent training to toughen up with computers. Every now and then I go to the uninstall a program list and decide, "Yes, I will get rid of that." And then up pops a message that says, "Are you sure you want to uninstall this programme?" Then I go to water my finger freezes and I run away.

Here's something that won't fix the problem with the Google Chrome you've already got installed but it might get you up and running so you can be productive again.

https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/google_chrome_portable

This will allow you to run Google Chrome on your PC without actually installing it. You'll need to take a note of the folder it's copied into so you know where to find it and run it because it's not going to appear in the Windows start menu.

This has nothing to do with a virus.. it's just the way Google works, the search engine defaults to the country you are in..

To fix the problem change the default search engine to..

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=%s (in the UK)

https://www.google.com/search?q=%s (in the US)

Works for me..

He's definitely got some sort of virus/adware/malware as he says it's redirecting him to completely different search engines, not just to the local version of Google. e.g. google.co.id

I had previously been typing "google.com.au" which is the Australian version and that was being hijacked. So, after trying Malware and then removing it deleting and reinstalling Chrome, using CCleaner and then and http://www.smadav.net/ , as suggested by Fastpitch 17, and now typing google.com.au we seem, at least for the moment, to have thrown the pirates overboard. I think I will have to start cleaning and scanning on a more religiously observed timetable. Meantime I still want to launch a class action against Bill Gates for all the stress.
Anyway, as Ned Kelly said just before they hanged him, "Such is life."

Good you at least got a break from it. Hopefully your better luck will continue.
