Do you keep your IDs updated?

lost my ID (Swiss) long time ago and did not renew. why should I?

I personally keep my US ID (drivers license) updated. It is valid for five years, and aside from Covid, usually I go every year anyway, just have to time it just in time before it expires next time.

I guess we are talking a bit past each other. Maybe let me ask like this. Did you ever need your ID in Indonesia?
I know that from the German side there isn't any problem cause you don't really need to have a valid ID if you live abroad permanently and have a valid passport.

I just try to think of any reason why any Indonesian institution or whoever would want to see my Gerrman ID. So far it never happened to me, except when I was new here and didn't have a Sktt/ktp yet.
You could say where you will be in the future. But you will never know that with certainty.

Like someone said you will never know, if you need to go back to your home country for an emergency purposes, your personal circumstance / goal change, etc. If the ID is already expire than it is not an ID.

Keep in mind getting your ID renewed could take time, the process could change anytime and it is not within your full control how long will it take to get it renewed.
Each to theri own but in my personal opinion it is good to get it renewed. Let alone if it costs you very little to get it renewed ?

Yes, I did and I still will not renew the ID card because in Indonesia its total useless and I'll rather use a local ID like SIM
As you can read in the thread nobody claims the non-Indonesian ID should be used in RI, it’s about going back.

As in the EU the Swiss ID card has a validity of 10 years and it’s not a big deal to have it updated at the embassies and consulates. But I wouldn’t be surprised if this changes; in my country there are ideas to stop providing the cards for those who live outside of the EU.

According to Swiss regulations you should have reported the ’loss’ of your ID with the police (at the time) so that might become a showstopper anyway.

You can do it online in most states. But you need (the same) US address of course.
That last thing got me screwed btw. The DMV seems to have administrative checks now if the people are still residents? I received a mail my Californian license could not be extended anymore since they found my home address had changed.

If you are going back to your home country that means international. Without a doubt, you will have in your possession a great ID. Your passport.
