Sometimes I count my blessings that I'm in indonesia. In the U.K. they want to put WARNING labels on avocados. Damn it you are so stupid you need a warning label on a avocado you shouldn' be allowed to use a knife. What is truly amazing is that not only did someone think about it but then someone else thought this would be a good idea of a way to spend taxes.
Fuck they should watch a 80 year old guy open a coconut with a machete. Now that' scary .

Does the rest of the world look at this and just shake there heads in amazement.

I hope the same people don't try to open oysters.....

Oops, sorry will resize the pic a bit more next time !

The UK like the USA is a free society where almost any crackpot idea can get a hearing or at least its day in the court of public opinion. Fortunately, nothing dries out a juicy story faster that being exposed to the sun lamp of the 4th estate.

Most "amateur cooks" are not cooks just ordinary people who want to try avocado for their first time in life.

"The British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons" should put label not on every fruit but on every knife instructions + compulsory gastronomy lessons of how to use knife for every "avocado" victim.

BTW. speaking about knifes, I noticed in Indonesia people when they peal eg. apple, potatoes ect. they peal in opposite direction than people from Europe. In Europe we peal by using thumb and peal by basically flexing muscle of thumb and rest fingers from outside toward us. In Indonesia I noticed people are "chopping" from their body towards outside world the same way as we are sharpening our stick for BBQ.

Interesting. We Americans chop away from our bodies, at least I do.

On one of the rare occasions when I actually accepted cooking help from my staff, I tried to convince the pembantu to use a peeler to peel potatoes. She wouldn't try it though; she said "I don't know how to use that tool" and used a small knife instead.

I have been here long enough that I left her alone, even though I wanted to be bossy and make her use the peeler.

It is interesting since I think it is more dangerous to peal this way. No control or hard to control knife once its starts to slide/cut, in case of small obstacles on its way we tend to use more power with less control.

I bought my wife and mother in law peelers (I think welding it's a child's play). My wife likes peeler a lot. Mother in law cannot use it just like your previous maid. Even my wife tried to convince her mother but to no avail.

Boy Scout rule # 4 "Always cut away from yourself and towards your Friends"

....
You Americans surely hate your friends. Hahaha

Just out of curiosity ....your veges and fruits are not flying to the floor (once slippery) with the pushing "towards your friends" force?

As for the knifes and UK in factories they use what is called safety knifes (for H&S reasons)... something like this (below): Maybe a small modification and ... a new generation Avocado 3000 safety knife will be available on the market for £5.99.

I just a small sharp knife for peeling potatoes... would drive me nuts to prat about with a peeler... however I use a peeler for carrots , if they are uniform in size/shape. Potatoes are just too wonky & still have to dig the eyes out- my little knife is like a razor & I can peel a potato faster than someone with a peeler- sad that I am... I actually had a mini competition with someone re this :D You guys have no idea just how exciting my life gets.

As for OT- not read the article- but initially I assumed it would warn not to eat the fruit if one had an allergy to avocado.
The nanny state of the UK is one of the reasons I left it.

Oh yea here' one of my all time fav labels. Now we don'

need this in indonesia cause everyone knows that paint is expensive and don' want to spill it.

This would make a lot of sense here in the LRT and fly-over projects.

Perhaps the 5 billion investigative committee will come up with this suggestion? (Where's my cut?)

When we bought my daughter's stroller in US 12 years ago, it had a warning label advising us not to fold up the stroller with the child inside it. WTF, are there people who actually need such a label? I suspect such a parent would not have the literacy skills to even benefit from such an admonition.

Can you image that here ? As they carry it home on the back of a motorscotter with the baby holding on to the handlebars.
