Hello there I'm a British Citizen married to an Indonesian citizen having a child soon. I heard that for the child to receive a birth certificate in Indonesia the foreign spouse must have an SKTT but for this an IMTA is needed.

I am not working in Indonesia so I have not needed to acquire an IMTA. So I wanted to know is it obligatory for me to acquire an IMTA in order to get an SKTT and finally a birth certificate for the child?

If this is not necessary or there is an alternate route please let me know as I do not want to pay a 100$ a month for IMTA when I'm not working in Indonesia?

Also just incase anyone knows if applying for an Indonesian passport for the child will this cause any issues if I also wanted to apply for a British passport for the child or make the application more complicated?

Hi, as someone who was in exactly the same situation a few years ago, I can confirm you definitely don't need an IMTA. It has nothing to do with the issue of having children. You don't need an SKTT either.
The child will be expected to have two passports (British and Indonesian) [strictly speaking you don't need to get an Indonesian passport, you could just use an affidavit for travelling in and out of the country, but getting an Indonesian passport is way easier than dealing with that.].
The process of getting a British passport at VFS is fairly easy although you need to find someone British to sign a declaration that the child is who you say they are (I think they need to sign the back of the passport photo too).

It would be helpful to know a) what visa you are currently here on and b) which part of Indonesia you are in.

Last year we also had our first child's birth certificate. We went to the local kelurahan office then to Disdukcapil. It was ready within one week and since everything was online they mailed the copy of birth certificate and we printed ourselves. Only document we needed to show was the formulir given from the kelurahan office and my wife's KTP and my sktt. That's it.

Your SKTT is like an ID Card when you are on KITAS or KITAP. I assume you must be on a spouse sponsored KITAS?

If so, you can obtain an SKTT (in fact, it is compulsory). Nothing to do with IMTA.

By the way, for the OP, in Jakarta the hospitals will arrange the birth certificate for you, and tell you what documents you need. (A bit like an agent service). It saves you some hassle at a time when you have better things to focus on.

I think SKTT is for KITAS holders. KTP-OA is for KITAP holders.

CMIIW

No need for any special visa, they register the birth of the child and the parents without regard to their respective immigration status. I was strictly speaking on a tourist visa when my first kid was born, doesn't matter, I was registered on the certificate as the father. As posted above any decent hospital will do the registration.

A child born to an Indonesian citizen, mother or father, gets a birth cert and a passport (this was not always the case but the law was changed a few years back). A child born to a UK citizen - who has a proper govt-issued marriage certificate, very important that bit, no nikah sirih - gets UK citizenship and you can register the child for a UK birth certificate and I would thoroughly recommend doing so, you don't want the kid applying for school or university 20 years down the line and trying to get a copy of their Indonesian birth cert.

Dual citizenship is fine up to age 17, can then be renewed until 21, after that it's make your mind up time.

Hi , Re your question on the 17th Nov about having to go to Jakarta to hand in Kitap Application . Your original post had replies blocked . The Jember office sent all my paperwork via inter-office mail to the Director Generals Dept in Surabaya for processing. Nothing went to Jakarta as far as I know. The female officer who told me I'd have to take everything to Surabaya and Jakarta is no longer in the office !!! She might have got her wrist slapped for pissing off to many Foreigners , had no people skills whatsoever . Very arrogant , self inflated bitch . Young guy that's handled all my previous Kitas renewals is back running things . Went like clockwork , all done in 4 months compared to the 6 she told me . Kitap Card now in my wallet , in the process of getting KTP and SKTTS cards and new KK Family card with my name included which the local office wouldn't let me apply for without the KITAP. Contact your local Immigration Office for any details , don't rely on any info on here or other sites . Every office seems to have there own interpretation of the rules/laws . PS , there all using WhatsApp now ,which I don't use . Can't get a reply to an email or F/Book message , phones ring out or you get put on hold and forgotten about if they do answer . Get a mobile contact number off the officer you deal with , that way you'll always talk to the same person and get answered !

Thanks for the info

Do you mean it took 4 months to get your kitap completed?

Would it take that long for kitas too?

Only ever had an SKTT letter and a Letter of Domisili from the local Kepala Desa in the 6 years I've lived here , which have been accepted by all government offices I've dealt with . Local Dudukcapil wouldn't issue me a SKTT or KTP card or new KK ,family card without the KITAP .

Yes , 4 months nearly to the day to Change the Status / ALHI STATUS from Kitas to Kitap . Was 3 months before all the Covid Crap . Not sure about Kitas now , I went through an agent in Surabaya (which I've found out is the most expensive in Indonesia ) when I got my Vitas then converted to Kitas when I arrived here permanently . If your on a Spouse Sponsored Kitas now and been married and living here for minimum of 2 Years you can apply to change the status/alhi status now to Kitap . My last Kitas renewal in 2020 took just on 3 months due to Covid rules etc , usually took 3-7 days but everything had to go to the Dept of Human Rights and the Director Generals Dept in Surabaya . Also had to get a letter of Recognition of Marriage from my embassy "Australian" which I've never needed before , an extra 700,000rp to the bill . Give yourself plenty of time either way , if your renewing your Kitas or Changing Status/Alhi Status and check with your local immigration office about rules /laws , fees , what documents/letters are required , how long thing might take etc etc . I got caught out 2 years running trying to Change Status /Alhi Status due to misinformation from the bitch then with the change in rules/ laws ,time to process etc . Start enquiring at least 6 months before your current Kitas expires if that's what you have.

Thanks, it's been 2 weeks since I left my alih status itas ke itap file in Kanwil, last I asked kanim about the process via WhatsApp the lady officer said its now pending for approval from ditejn imigrasi, she sent me a screen shot also. I asked about sending the documents to jkt because when I had my 1st Kitas we sent it via courier then it was done in one day in Kanwil and I didn't need to wait. But this time it's different the front desk lady at kanwil said it would take 3 days to 1 week to complete the file then the kanIm will inform us, as I have mentioned earlier the reply I got from the kanIm when I asked about it. Kinda confusing because they didn't tell me anything about sending the file to jkt as I did in 2018!

Wow , Imigrasi Jember didn't come for the home interview for just on 6 weeks , guy said they wait until they get a few then spend a few days travelling around to the applicants that live a long distance from the office , then another 2-3weeks before they told me the interview was all good and to come in for boimetrics , that's when she told me it now has to go to Ditjen in Surabaya . If the dates of approval are anything to go by it was approved in 2 weeks but sat somewhere for nearly another month before I got the Approval notification by Email , then another month before they notified me that it was complete and ready for collection . Check the date on the ITAP card and the stamp in your passport when you get it . Mine were backdated to the day I submitted the application 26th June 2021 not the date it was approved 26th September 2021 . So my ITAP is only good for 4years 8 months from the date I picked it up . The guy at the Jember office also told me the MERP /Multiple entry/exit permit does not have to be renewed after 2 years unless I intend to travel overseas again . He said to just come in and renew it when and if you intend to travel o/seas. Sounds like you might have yours back a lot quicker if it's already at Ditjen after 2 weeks . I tried tracking mine on there on line web site . No record of it until after I got the email then it showed up as complete . Where are you living ? Seems to be a lot quicker if your closer to the offices , I'm 4 hours from Jember Imigrasi Office and about 10hours from Ditjen in Surabaya . They use inter-office mail but I'm sure they wait until they've got a pile and send it once a month in the remote areas .

I applied for my itap conversion in nov 1st and the following week we had our home interview and 3-4 days later I had photo and fingerprints taken and sent the file to KanWil. Now kanWil just a couple min scooter ride from the kanIm. Since I know the procedure I thought it would be the same as my 1st Kitas, but as I said earlier in KanWil the lady told us to wait 3 days to 1 week ( it's already 2 weeks) and when I asked about sending the documents to jkt she replied she had no idea but KanIm will let us know when it's ready! I don't know probably the rules already changed since COVID(!) I have no idea. I also have tried to check the status of our application but no luck, I also asked the imigrasi officer about it he said you don't need to check it on the website because it's broken, better I should WA them! Btw, I live in Riau. I have been following your post about itap to get the basic idea of procedures and timeline given the COVID situation but as we know every province has their own way to do it so I guess I would just wait since nothing else to do! 😏

Yep , every province ,region ,office ,officer . I had the same guy for all Kitas renewals , everything went smooth , 3-7 days . Emailed and rang me if he needed anything , rang me when it was ready to pick up . Then I go for the Alhi Status and there's the bitch who had her own interpretation of the rules/laws , she wanted all new SKTTS , Domicli , Surat Keterangan Menikah letters from the Kepala Desa with current dates when the ones I had from my last Kitas renewal in 2020 were all good for a year , changes with the Covid rules , there computer system was down on 2 occasions which cost me a 7-8 hour return trip each time plus travel costs etc etc . Glad it's finally over for 5 years . Definately need to be patient with the buggers , if you start rattling the chain they just throw another hoop in for you to jump through . Riau , wifes got a lot of family up that way in Jambi . I'm way down the bottom of south/east Java , Grajagan Pantai about an hour south of Banyuwangi . Cheers .
