Renting a house - pay upfront ?

Sounds like a nice place! Any recommendation for a CCTV: brand and type? Not Chinese.
There are a few websites providing rating for CCTV, such as this.
Just have a look the one non Chinese

These are the long established brands specialising in CCTV and security, non Chinese Brands.
ADT, CHUB, Avigilon. They are well known among the design engineers in the construction industries. But typically they are more expensive
Other possibilities Bosch, Samsung, Sony but they are not specialising in CCTV and security.

Hikvision is not only Chinese but owned by the state and has been banned from use in the UK for "sensitive" locations.

I do have HKVision. Mainly for price. If the chinese want to classify my area as sensitive, all the power to them and boredom. If they want to see my fat ass running around my house, it's their eyes burning. My system only goes on line when I leave the house for any good length of time. Otherwise it's just recording 24/7. I mean, look at your routers, modems, and phones. The freaking chinese spys have access to everything. Web sites and probably mail. You know they are incapable of developing anything they don't steal from someone else first.

It is one thing to be highly critical of the CCP which functions without scruples and will steal ideas and information from anywhere but, perhaps unintentionally, the above remarks seems to have strayed from political critique to a remark that is racist. When one looks at the history of China, Wikipedia asserts China is the source of many innovations, scientific discoveries and inventions.[1] This includes the Four Great Inventions: papermaking, the compass, gunpowder, and printing (both woodblock and movable type)

Then there is a very long list of other first achievements. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Chinese_inventions

I doubt there has been a decline of Chinese intelligence or inventiveness even if the power, deceitful and Machiavellian nature of the CCP government has led to very negative views about the Chinese people as a whole.

The main problem for me .. is that through the cctv (with poor security protocol) a hacker can easily access your computer network and from there can steal your passwords for bank accounts etc.

My CCTV is on a different network from the computers and the two are invisible to each other. If you have cameras with remote access, that is my number one recommendation. Feel free to look around my yard all you want if you really want to watch my cameras.

Oh yes, a seperate nerwork for the cctv would be safer.

An IP camera is not very useful if you only use the SD card and if you don’t connect it to the app on your phone. Which obviously again is connected to your home network and which contains all banking apps. But I’ve never seen any issues there. 🤷🏼

Btw, many cameras I see are fake or non operational. And most home owners are not so keen to install power supply and RJ45 cabling for peace of mind of the rentee and security purposes only.

I live in Bandung. I have a friend selling a house fully finished. He just built himself a brand new house and doesn't want the one he is currently in. The neighbors keep to themselves and are pretty friendly. It's not an upscale location, but not bad. He is my very close friend. This just came to mind so I posted.
Thanks for that hint mate, we're looking for an empty house for rent as we ship our goods from back home.

Thank you all for those good hints. I'll keep you updatet, we'll arrive in Bandung after Ramadan and we'll start search then.

Ha...I just went from this thread to the car thread where a chinese company is launching near identical copies of Japanese brands. Maybe China can still invent products but they have a tendancy now to just copy others and have zero respect for IP. This has happened in nearly every industry. Perhaps copying but cheaper is the new inventiveness?

Whenever I read something generic on the internet these days I immediately assume it has been written by chatGPT. Apologies if that's not the case here.

It can feel like a big risk without a solid guarantee that everything will be fine during your stay. A good solution is to look for landlords who are open to more flexible payment options, such as monthly payments or a smaller upfront deposit. You can also consider working with reputable rental agencies that have positive reviews and can help ensure that your rights as a tenant are protected.
Well, you could also die before the end of the prepaid period and therefore feel ripped off.....

I bought a Chinese camera. It works but it forces you to use their app.
The app requires access to your wifi (I suppose that's normal)
It has adverts
It tries to make you buy their cloud storage
I don't know about internet security or what options the makers have to attack devices on your wifi network.
It's still up there but I rarely use it so it will probably end up in a drawer.

I install 4 Chinese IP cam cctv, 8 channel NVR with external POE switch, for more testing purpose before we install permanently in our hut. It's low end 4K system, each cost less than Rp. 1m. Performance wise is not bad, so far reliability and availability is 100% but the AI feature for IVS and SMD is very limited. For cyber security issue, the system is fully stand alone. No need to connect to internet - all recorded into harddisk, capacity up to 2x10 TB - or you can can connect to a dedicated IP router separate from your computer network. for remote monitoring and cloud storage.
I'm considering to have more advanced system particularly the SMD feature with more channels. I'd like to test the SMD for birds movement in our paddy field.

Finding a rental can be risky without guarantees, but you can mitigate this by seeking landlords who offer flexible payment options like monthly payments or smaller deposits. Additionally, consider using reputable rental agencies with good reviews to help protect your tenant rights.

On a related note, I recently came across information about the Best House Buying Companies For Cash In The UK 2024, which could be beneficial if you're considering long-term stability rather than renting. These companies offer quick sales for homeowners, which can provide them with the liquidity they need and might lead to better rental opportunities in the future. While this might not be directly related to your immediate rental concerns, it highlights the importance of finding trustworthy housing options, whether buying or renting. If you are looking for a safe and reliable rental experience, checking out some resources and reviews on landlords and agencies could be really helpful here.
Stupid Bot. Go back to your owner .....
