Government & Business

I am a bit shocked and appalled that you guys could insinuate that corruption may be endemic in Indonesian society.:hand:

I am a bit shocked and appalled that you guys could insinuate that Indonesia has a society

Indonesia has a rich & multifaceted society an integral part of which is the valuation of personal relationships and patronage. Some elements of that sort of social structure are viewed as corruption through a Western lens. Rightly so in many instances, but not always, in my opinion. I realize that Indonesia is more nuanced than I have previously acknowledged.

I hope the President can turn words into action.. yes it is quite obvious, and you dont need to be a president to see the many reasons..

My Daughter was offered a position in the Drug enforcement Agency here, cost plus being a Virgin,150 million didn’t have a problem with the Virgin part but we didn’t think 150 mil was worth it, the money we were told was for uniform and training, her friend who is the same height as my daughter, 154cm and in the agency is really scary, she tells me she slaps dealers around and has a gun in her handbag, I wouldn’t trust her with a pencil case, she says she isn’t corrupt but some how here salary is 10 mil a month
you know you could report that right ?
Nope its not a joke, with valid evidence, even 20K from Kelurahan could be retrieve back to you (only apply to KK/KTP processes, exclude SKDU )

Part of life’s rich pattern here so I will give it a miss, my Daughter didn’t take up the generous offer

If similar offer came up, post it here or pm me, I could direct you to the officials who could cross check it right away.
Usually those registrations are free. I'm quite familiar with this because I was one of the victim too

Corn

The government has declared that Indonesia is now self-reliant on corn. Reality is, the government is not allowing corn imports and feed mills are forced to import wheat as a substitute for corn to produce animal feeds. Watch out, egg and chicken price may go up.

UPDATE: The government has finally allowed the importation of corn... and earlier this month, Gorontalo exported corn to the Philippines (contradiction) !?

Halal Certification

The government is planning to make it mandatory for all food products to be either Halal certified or be labeled non-Halal. To be labeled “non-Halal”, even if the product is halal (because some small businesses just cannot afford the cost of certification), will cost them their business as many Muslims will surely avoid buying their products. Is this really necessary? Please do not kill the small businesses…

There’s more, halal certification will also be mandatory for all pharmaceutical products. If enacted, Indonesia will be the first in the world (there must be good reasons why other Islamic countries are not requiring it). This will only increase the cost of manufacturing medicinal drugs in Indonesia (price will go up), and prevent some good products from being imported (less option for cure).

I’m not done yet, this one is “over the top” (in my opinion). Halal certification will also be required for garments. Now don’t ask me because I don’t know why. But there is money involved in all this as companies will be appointed to “help” businesses register their products with the halal authority.

So either “everything comes down to money” or “Indonesia is just trying to become the Islamic capital of the world”, you be the judge.

Most Indonesians know the score. Meaning they put little faith in government certifications. I don't think anyone is going out of business, least of all the local vendors who know their patrons and are known by their patrons.

The Ministry of Trade and KADIN

The Minister of Trade recently signed an MOU with KADIN (Indonesian Chamber of Commerce & Industry) which will require importers & exporters to be members of KADIN. Now, as members of KADIN, you have to pay membership fees and other contributions for “this & that”. So it is a burden to some companies, especially the smaller ones. And how about exporters who ship “once in a blue moon”, like the wooden arts & crafts in Central Java? Do they have to become members of KADIN first before being allowed to ship?

I'm not defending the rule, but as a former director of a business organization in Indonesia, I will note that membership in business organizations usually has a variety of categories. For example, a small company that has gross revenue of less than XX, and/or fewer than XX employees, and/or exports a value of under XX annually, would presumably be eligible for membership at a very low rate.

So, while the rule may be silly, it is possible that following it isn't all that onerous.

I've never liked KADIN, they "assist" foreign companies to do business in Indonesia with their own companies rather than growing the sector. But then again I've always been idealistic.

My question is why is it required? So KADIN gets more members? More revenues from membership fees because their membership have dropped significantly? Why KADIN and not the association of import export companies?

I have no idea what the answers are. I suspect that official answer is at least somewhat related to getting more members - "we can be a stronger voice promoting sound policy toward business if we represent, and receive input from, the maximum possible number of firms." But that is just a wild-ass guess on my part.

With regard to the Halal certification I don't see it as an issue. I don't care one way or another about the Halal issue but I believe the government should implement more certification and approval systems (hopefully clean ones). They bring in tax revenue and also help to bring in proper standards. Indonesia desperately needs more standards in everything from construction, to vehicle worthiness so i don't see food as being an exception from this. Unfortunate that (of course) standards are only being applied because of a religious aspect.

I get the flip side which is that this will just be another corrupt system but the country should still strive for something better.
Yes the clothing bit is ridiculous though and typical of Indonesian excess in trying to be overly religious.

Ha i guess i was going through a moment of Idealism in my last post about wanting more government standards. Ive just been told that my company is redoing our Kadin and we have been instructed (in writing) that we have to also join another "association" or the Kadin wont be renewed. So that means joining an association to join an association???
I'm fighting this but its typical of the layers of bullshit that appear when the Indonesian government get involved so maybe expecting them to introduce fair standards and a simple system is just too much to ask. Better to go back to the idea of no government interference as the Indonesian government just cant do anything except in a manner that benefits individuals too....
