Big fish.

I have never understood why* he was a Mahkamah Konstitusi judge. I'll always remember when he was Minister of Justice and Human Right and that, presenting the then new Immigration law, made a silly mistake, clearly showing that he either had a limited knowledge of what he was talking about or that he let incompetent staff preparing his speeches. Or both.

* everybody know that he was SBY's puppet but what I question is the professional competence.

I hope the KPK can squeeze information out of the other 9. One judge only means something in a tie. The ones wanting the court to go in their favor would need better odds the just one judge.

I never really know what to make of these arrests, or more for me lack of arrests. They charge so few people given the prevalence and magnitude of corruption. It almost seems more like the odd symbolic act, that quite often is just as likely political as strictly legal.

I disagree that they seem symbolic. While there is a lot of corruption, the KPK have to go after those that cause much greater state losses then the AGO would need to get. It takes a lot of work to get the bigger fish since they have so many that do all they can to protect them. Plus, the KPK loves to catch them with their hand in the cookie jar. Makes proving things a lot easier. To me, the ones that need to step up their game and actually get people into jails is the AGO. It seems even when they have big investigations, many go silent and nothing happens. I'll leave others to come up with their reasons why that is. I have mine.

I am all for the KPK but one of their ex leaders jailed for murder. He had charged one of SBY's in laws. Last couple of leaders try to charge a General/police no longer at work. But I believe the general is now head of intelligence. So things seem more about backroom deals then justice. The police and AGO thought of as very corrupt. So how much they can actually accomplish? I wish they were strengthened and could actually touch the untouchables but I doubt it.

Co-incidentally, Jakarta Post today......

"President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has commuted the remaining prison sentence of Antasari Azhar, the former antigraft body chief convicted in a controversial murder case that ended his stellar career as a graft fighter.
Jokowi approved on Monday Antasari’s clemency request to commute the remaining six years of the 18 years he was sentenced to after being found guilty of killing businessman Nasrudin Zulkarnaen in 2008.
The murder case, which many criticized for standing on weak evidence, closed the long career of the former prosecutor who led the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and put in prison prominent figures, including Aulia Pohan, a former high-ranking Bank Indonesia official and father-in-law of president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s son, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono."

They had recently released/granted clemency former KPK leader Antasari sitting in the front row of the Jakarta Governors debate tonight. He was sitting with the Ahok supporters. What do you make of this fastpitch or others?

Just a little message for Agus's pappy.

It's a high stakes chess game, as much as Jokowi would like to, he still can't go after SBY directly. Showing him the finger like this however is an option :)

Exactly. It is a fascinating chess game. I am not really surprised that Jokowi has chosen to free Antasari Azhar, a convicted murderer. it is what he is, despite the fact that some "journalists" pretend that he was convicted on weak evidences, the same "journalists" which were saying at the time of his conviction that he should feel lucky that he was not sentenced to death).
Though terribly unfair and unrespectuous for the family of the victim, it is a smart way to discredit SBY and, as you say, to show him the finger.

Of course he may have important evidence which may be produced later...unless he has an untimely demise...

In my opinion, Jokowi has so far played the chess game far better than any former furniture salesman has any right to.

Remember the "Permanent Coalition"? That lasted barely a year, and even the party of Prabowo's VP pick has crossed the aisle into the government.

The police will not reopen but will examine some evidence, if possible, used to convict the innocent Antasari.

this fellas arrest made my wife smile and "woo hoo"

The innocent Antasari? May I kindly ask you what you know about the case whch encourage you to affirm that he was innocent. Have you reviewed and considered any of the evidences, including those his skilled lawyers managed to have put under the carpet for various "legal" reasons, such as recording and videotapes?
To me, what is sure is that the police (and politicians) wanted him out of the picture and he gave them a superb occasion. Now, innocent of the murder, definitely not.

While you are at it, I kindly suggest you to review Antasari carrier and functions and wonder if, on the first place, he should have ever been a ketua KPK. No really, nominating and electing a former prosecutor head of the anti corruption commission was a tad funny.

No, I have not closely followed the case, or the facts, which it seems you have. Mine was more of a naive hope......the good guys on one side President Jokowi and Ahok with the President correcting an injustice Antasari. The fact of perhaps Antasari overstepping himself i.e. going after Agus' father inlaw and pissing off a few too many powerful people. The hope that there are some trying to be clean and wanting better things for the Indonesian people.

I think that there are, but that there are very few. It's unfortunately very difficult, if not impossible, to grow within the political system without putting an hand (or both) in the sh1t that corruption is. And once you are in, the others have a strong grasp on you.

People who are in charge, all in their fifties or more, have spent 20 or 30 years in the system and have had to use it to grow, step by step, to the function they hold today. Nothing comes for free and those who have allowed you where you are will remind you this.
