How to get a gecko off of tape?

I was getting something out of the kitchen when i noticed one particularly brave cicak (gecko). It just sat on the table and stared at me, no matter how close I got. I thought I might be turning into a cicak magnet, like BA, but no. The little guy had managed to stick almost his entire body to a large piece of tape my kid left lying face-up.

The solution I came up with was to spray him with olive oil where his body was stuck to the tape. I started at the front and gave him time to free himself, rather than pulling on him. I held the tape firmly so he would have something to push off against. Once the front legs were free, I put him next to a rug, so he could pull himself the rest of the way off. He was free in less than five minutes. Here's hoping the olive oil has no negatie effects on him other than making it hard to climb a wall for a day or so.

Anyone got another solution I might have tried?

I was just going to suggest that- when I saw you weren't in need. I had to do the same thing a year or so ago, oil works a treat as you found out. I am sure olive oil is less harmful than WD40- which I am tempted to spray the buggers with at times :)

That reminds me of a hilarious scene we witnessed at an outdoor restaurant on a Micronesian island many years ago. We'd finished our breakfasts, and a tokek came along and began eating leftovers from my husband's plate of pancakes and sausage. The plate was covered in syrup and soon the lizard's feet were as well. When he finished his meal, he scampered away and tried to climb up the wall. But he kept sliding back down. Scamper-scamper-scamper-CLIMB...slide, slide, slide, hit the ground. Try again: Scamper-scamper-scamper-CLIMB...slide, slide, slide, hit the ground. It was quite entertaining.

I have used cleansing milk with cikaks caught on fly paper before.

If you posted about it in LIIF, then the idea may have come from you. I never know if any of my ideas are original or not.

hehe, I have no idea if I did or not.
I prefer to think that you are intelligent and used logic, whilst using caution & empathy too :D

Lucky you haven't got a cat like mine - it would have been well and truly chewed up by the time you got to see it.

Yes i noticed a lot of our gecko dont have tails anymore but the kittens are happy

I guess I would be considered the horrible one here. It would end up in the trash soon to be replaced by some relative of it.
