I've been using speedofme, but recently they started using a Jakarta server rather than the previous outside Singapore/) server. Good for them, expanding their service. however I'd like to see international speeds. Can someone suggest a test site?

this is this mornings test for me

Yes, speedtest.net. From there you can chose any server you want around the world.

This may sound silly coming from a non tech mind, but why would you want a speed test to a server that you are not using? I live in the Malang area and maybe wrongly assume that I am connected to a server in Malang. But sometimes a speed test shows results from Surabaya and even Jakarta. What good does a speed test do if I am not actually using that server?

Of course, if i am using a VPN and want to find the fastest speeds, then I understand. But I use my VPN selectively because my local speeds are always faster than any VPN connection I have ever found.

It's not exactly like that. Each website you visit is hosted on a server. The server location varies from website to website. This forum, for instance, is hosted in Singapore, so it may be useful to see if your Internet provider has a decent speed to Singapore servers.

Obviously, the further the server, the slower the speed and response time. Most Indonesian websites are hosted in Indonesia so that they are physically as close as possible to their audience. So it's good to know what speed you should expect when visiting an Indonesian website. But I'm sure you visit many websites hosted overseas as well so that's why you could test to see if the speed to those servers is good or not.

With Indonesian providers, the domestic traffic goes through a domestic network. But the exits to go to international networks are much fewer. And those exits vary in terms of speed and capacity. This creates a bottleneck which impact international speeds compared with domestic speeds. It's the same everywhere in the world but countries like Indonesia still lag behind in terms of connections to the rest of the world. These are major infrastructure investments that need to be driven by the government.

Thanks for the time to answer. Got it now

Seconded. They also have a great smartphone app for free.

But be careful. One single test could eat up 20-25 MB data traffic. It's fine if you're smartphone internet plan is 4gig, but if you buy a limited internet bandwidth (e.g. Telkomsel Flash Daily 15 megs) -- you'll drain all your available quota in one single test :D

thanks, will give them a go. I need speed only for online gaming.

edit, update. to US ping 209.. and dl 16ish
to Oz ping 170... di 8.5ish

For online gaming, I usually try to pick servers in Singapore or Hong Kong, if they are available. The next best for me is Japan which happens more often than not because one of my best friends lives in Japan and plays online games with me.

Then it depends on what type of game you play and how well the game is optimized. When I first arrived in Indonesia, I was on a crappy speedy 512Kbps connection, was playing BF3 with a 150+ ping and it wasn't horrible.

ya i used to TRY playing on that crap internet .. yikes. Playing via Playstation I think I'm stuck with what i get
