Mobil Rakyat...new cars

The best selling pickups here are the models that you see used by logistics companies and builders / developers or materials shops. These are not so flashy as the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, etc. And their technology is rather outdated, you’re lucky if it has a EURO 3 engine.

For instance the Suzuki Carry:

In Europe the Chinese car manufacturers have started a real invasion with Electric Vehicles. Brands we never heard of before, as Zeekr and HiPhi, start popping up like mushrooms.

Also in Indonesia we see quite a bit of Chinese cars, esp. Wuling of course. But here they’re mostly equipped with gasoline engines, even the MG.

One of the more recent brands is Chery (with one ‘r’). The have already some models for sale as the Tiggo 7 and recently introduced the Omoda 5. It has a 1,5 liter engine and with a size of 4,4 meter it can be positioned against the HR-V and Creta (with 330 juta).

It has some premium options and characteristics as ventilated seats. (They are perforated and can cool the body.) Which can be great in this climate.

Btw, brands you might remember from years ago as Lada and Smart have restarted as Chinese now. Often in collaboration with Western car companies. Obviously Volvo also has Chinese owners and many companies, including BMW, MB and Tesla build cars for other parts of the world in China,

Ford is back

Yes, that is correct. They disappeared in 2016 and got back into the Indonesian market approx. a year ago.

Now that ‘disappearing’ is relative; there has been import and sales of the Ford Ranger by a company called RMA since 2018.

This RMA has been operating in Indonesia for 15 years, as a modifier of Ford vehicles which the mining companies needed. In 2016, when Ford left, it was appointed as the authorized distributor for spare parts, dealing with the warranty claims and providing the roadside assistance. Of course you still need those things for recalls, assurance and so on. Even after you leave, customers will be driving your cars for years.

So now RMA has become the Ford distributor. And the weird thing is that not so much has changed since the 2022 ‘comeback’; they sell the Ranger pickup truck but now in multiple versions and added the Everest SUV. And that’s it. I don’t know if there are plans to get other models in the portfolio.

I'm planning to paint the truck bed of my Ford Ranger. Is there any locally produced paint? There are some imported truck bed coating on Tokopedia but all in aerosol spray. I'm looking for paints in gallon or quarts, and made-in-Indonesia.

If you can wait a bit Dave, I would suggest to visit the GIIAS in August in the BSD Expo.

Next to cars there is always a huge hall with (aftermarket) accessories, also for pickup trucks. They will definitely have what you’re looking for (if it exists).

Thanks jstar. Repainting it is not urgent, so it can wait, your information appreciated.

I don't think I'll ever get rid of this old truck (2006 model) because it is the last model with CONVENTIONAL diesel engine. It's like some people who kept their old cars because it is a CARBURETOR gasoline engine. I remember Mitsubishi Strada had an HDX model with conventional diesel engine, but later HDX model has COMMONRAIL. I like conventional because it can consume "Solar" or even fuel made from used cooking oil. Good vehicle for preppers on doomsday :LOL::LOL:

Yeah those common rail TDCi engines appeared somewhat later, 2011 I think?

For the non petrolheads; this is a way to directly inject the fuel. It is somewhat more efficient.

A major reason why diesel engines are popular in heavy duty cars, is that they offer a lot of torque. That is the capacity to do work, while (horse)power is how quickly a task can be accomplished. The weird thing is that you get even more torque from ….. an Electric Vehicle. And there it is immediately available.

The Audi A7 Sportback will disappear soon. Beautiful car but esp. in Indonesia amazingly expensive; count on 1.9 billion rupiah for the 3 liter Quattro version.

The sales numbers of last month:
  1. Honda Brio 7.327 units
  2. Toyota Avanza 5.641 units
  3. Daihatsu Sigra 5.027 units
  4. Honda HR-V 4.221 units
  5. Toyota Rush 3.939 units
  6. Toyota Calya 3.868 units
  7. Daihatsu Ayla 3.475 units
  8. Toyota Innova Zenix 3.408 units
  9. Daihatsu Terios 3.045 units
  10. Toyota Veloz 2.523 units
Obviously 2. and 10. are the same cars as well as the Xenia which also scores high with approx. 2.500 units and occupies place 11. The Sigra and Calya on 3. and 6. as well. And so are the Rush and Tereos on places 5. and 9. Knowing that, the list would look very different if we add those up.

I thought Toyota Rush and Daihatsu Terios are being replaced by Toyota Raize and Daihatsu Rocky... so there will be no more "All New" Rush or Terios in the future.

If that is true, then I'm surprised by the sales number of Rush and Terios. Maybe not a lot of people knew about it, that the model they are buying is the last. Or rather, people are buying it because they know it's the last.

Well, the rumors are that a Rush would be replaced by a ‘Raize Space’.

So theoretically that also would be a 3 row 7-seater, as the Rush currently is.

But Toyota is also reportedly prepping a new compact SUV with a capacity of 5 passengers. It would compete with Honda HR-V, Hyundai Creta, the Suzuki Grand Vitara, and the production version of the new Mitsubishi XFC Concept we talked about before. Because the Raize is somewhat smaller. But then the question is how the Corolla Cross would be positioned.

So it’s still unclear what this ‘Raize Space‘ could be. If it would ever arrive.

Do they wish the association to be Raize as in "raise space' or Raize as in "raze to the ground"

Race to Space?

It seems the name ‘Raize Space’ has also been registered in Japan and China.

The MG HS gets a facelift. But only the version with the combustion engine (ICE) in the right steering countries. The plug-in (PHEV) version stays the same.

Here they sell both. In Europe the brand is positioned as EV only but not in East Asia.

Something else what they will introduce is a convertible EV. Now that’s rather cool. It will be introduced in Europe in 2024. Here? I don’t think so.

In the newspaper Volkskrant (The Netherlands), 21 april 2023:

"Shanghai Mobile Show: In hall 6 – with Chinese car brands such as Nio, Xpeng, Li Auto and Zeekr – journalists crowd around the new electric models. They queue up for interviews with executives, who bravura announce their international plans. They sip free drinks in lounges with large windows overlooking the busy stands.

In contrast, Hall 5 – with European brands such as Volkswagen and Audi – is unusually quiet. The new electric Volkswagen ID.7 gets attention, but the rest of the VW stand is full of petrol and diesel cars, and nobody cares about that. The cleaners, who are ready with chamois and duster to brush away every fingerprint, stand idly between the shiny Tiguans and Sagitars. ....."

Yes, what most people seem to forget is the huge focus on EV in the largest market of the world. In 5 years there will be no more introductions of new gasoline cars in China.

Many think it’s a European (i.e. Norwegian and Dutch) thingy while the whole EU will implement this (2035) and the US is also pushing (with subsidies). Even the pickup world with RAM and F150 follow.

The question here in an Indonesia is not what but when. I’m not sure if we will still be around to see it (2050?). Obviously many brands -esp. the top 3 from Japan- are not motivated to change and are stalling, they want to exploit their existing solutions and maximize their investments of the past.

In China Dongfeng Honda launched a plug-in hybrid version of the CR-V. This is obviously different from the CR-V e:HEV that was introduced in Thailand last month.

So it’s not very clear if Indonesia will get a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) which comes with a larger battery to support longer electric mode usage. This model can go as far as 73 km without gasoline. But of course you need to charge it first.

I think the the chance is higher we will see the ‘regular’ hybrid without charge cable here.

1682335394325.jpeg

The current generation of the CR-V sells 500-600 cars per month in Indonesia. The eagerly awaited sixth generation is already introduced in multiple countries.

There is a choice of a 1,500 cc turbo engine with a maximum power of 190 HP and a hybrid with a 2.0 liter engine and two electric motors to produce a total output of 207 HP. Both have a CVT transmission.
