Mobil Rakyat...new cars

Honda is introducing a new medium sized MPV in Indonesia, called the Stepwgn. No that’s not a typo. And new is relative since it’s already the sixth generation of this car that exists since 1996. But so far this Lego brick was mainly meant for the Japanese market.

It will be a hybrid, it’s unclear if we will get the 1,5 or 2.0 liter version. The transmission is a CVT.

Talking about Honda and hybrids, the new HR-V is now also available as e:HEV. 450 juta.

Besides the Agya GR Sport, Toyota also introduced a Stylix version of this small car.

As far as I can see, it is just an Agya with some GR (Gazoo Racing) logo’s and stickers. It does not have any improvements in suspension or engine.

From a residual second hand value and quality perspective, the Honda Brio might be a better choice if you prefer a manual transmission (stick).

Which is 5 juta cheaper, a bit more powerful and also received a facelift (LED lights etc.).

But if you prefer an automatic or CVT, this Stylix becomes very interesting price wise.

The more Toyotas with GR stickers the better. It make the GR Corolla even more of a sleeper?

Hmm, you could also argue that -like the Beemers with their M, Audi’s with their S and Benzes with their AMG stickers and logo’s- it is all rather fake.

Although I would prefer the Civic Type R, the GR Corolla is obviously a beast with its 300+ HP. Just a shame they gave it a 3 cylinder engine. They will build it in the UK btw.

NB: For those who might not know, a ‘sleeper’ is a car that looks normal, nothing special, but which suddenly can show off a huge amount of power, speed and torque.

Civic R here in Thailand is about the same price give or take $10,000. Looks a bit boy racer for me.🧓 300hp through the front wheels on a wet day? I'm from an era when 200hp through the front wheels was considered the maximum. Not an option though as no Auto for the wife when I get too old to drive.
Audi R3 also here ( +200 kgs) but maybe a bit dated. Lack of nearby dealership a bit of a downer.

Just a shame they gave it a 3 cylinder engine.

Yeah but 3-cylinder is half a six. The best sounding engines. Unless you have a Lexus LFA V10 !!
3-cylinder motorbikes sound the best?
The reason it is 3-cyliner as you know is for weight, or rather lack of.:bolt:

Anyway the wife didn't win the lottery yet:violin:

Audi R3 also here
Talking about amount of cylinders and sound, not a lot can top the 5 cylinder engine of the R3. It’s a shame the smaller Audi’s are not sold in Indonesia.

And about hot rod and very fast smaller cars, next year the Volkswagen Golf GTI gets a 50 year special edition. Esp. with the performance package it sets amazing times on the race track Nordschleife in Germany. So now it’s waiting for the 50 year edition of the R.

The Volkswagen GTI is sold in Indonesia. But with a price of 1,2 milyar you don’t see it a lot.

Another interesting Volkswagen is the ID.Buzz. After years of teasers it finally arrived. Hopefully the hippies from back then have high level jobs now and can fork over the 1,5 billion rupiah.

Stellantis, the group with car brands as Peugeot, DS, Citroên, Opel, Fiat, RAM, Dodge, … is not doing so well.

Many technical issues, bad responses on warranty claims, chaotic recalls, pricing in the US, and a constant rebadging between the brands all had their negative effects.

Anyway, this is the Citroën C5 Aircross. It is for sale here but I’ve never seen it driving around in Indonesia.

And this is the Ultra? Really? Absolutely? New C5 Aircross that will replace it.

It is cheaper than its Opel or Peugeot counterparts. They position Citroën a bit like the Volkswagen Group does with Skoda. Practically the same cars but more economical.

Stellantis has HUGE problems with it"s 1,2L Puretech engine. Google it up.

"Stellantis's 1.2 PureTech engine, found in various Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel, and Jeep models, has faced significant reliability issues, particularly concerning its wet timing belt design. The timing belt, which runs in engine oil, can degrade prematurely, releasing particles that can clog the oil system and lead to engine damage or failure. Additionally, some engines also suffer from excessive oil consumption due to issues with piston rings. Stellantis has acknowledged these problems and is offering compensation and warranty extensions to affected owners. "
In the US it are mainly pricing issues.
Citroën nowadays is only a shadow of what it once was..... A very innovative company technically and design wise.

I bought a C3 Aircross last year. I was concerned about thr timing belt issue on the puretech engines, so I researched it quite a bit. Thankfully, they have changed the design and now use a timing chain rather than belt which will not degrade in the engine oil.

So far I am very happy with it. Nice peppy engine for its class, great suspensions, but the bare minimum of tech and luxuries. However, that's enough for me, happy with Android Auto, digital dash, reverse camera and... That's it. Fabric seats, old school key, there's even a keyhole on the door.

I tried the veloz which has a lot more tech with the 360 camera, blind spot indicator, keyless start and more. But suspension and engine are terrible. So I decided that at that price range, I will trade tech that I don't really use anyway for a better ride.

Too much unnecessary hitech gadgets on modern cars, proximity sensors, rear camera, satellite radio, irreparable electronics, etc
..
It all make a middle size, middle class car VERY expensive.
A Citroën GS Special with hydraulic suspension was 21.800 Francs in the mid 70's. That is (inflation adjusted) 13.675 Euro.

Try to find a similar size car now in Europe... A C3 Aircross is 20.000 € in basic version, 22.000 in middle version.

Well, you don’t want the PureTech from before 2021. But after that it‘s fine.

Stellantis made the choice for this engine while they also could have gone for the FSA (Fiat) Firefly engine. Mainly short term cost driven, but also because of the French dominance in the group. They probably regret that now.

It is extremely difficult to compare car prices between now and three to four decades ago. Automatic multi zone aircon, 6+ airbags, ESP/ABS, electric windows in the back, remote key lock, alarm, rain sensor, automatic gearbox/CVT, GPS, blind spot detection, one pedal drive, auto start/stop, tire pressure control, etc. etc. were often missing. So in fact cars are relatively cheaper than back then.

Also, whether you like it or not, many technical assistance systems, the ADAS we talked about before, are mandatory in new cars. Manufacturers have no choice.

Except for the A/C, airbags and ABS, all the rest I don't need.
And the auto start/stop is the first thing to go in the garbage bin....
Bon, the last time I regulary drove a car was early 2000 my Renault Espace TD, left France in 2008 and except for a 1 week rental Jeep on holiday haven't driven a car since.
That's 17 years.
If I had to buy one here (no way because of lack of parking) it would be a old Suzuki Jimmy, a combi VW or any other old classic.
Now, I have been sitting a few times here in a BYD SUV (Grab) and it was very confortable ! But the price 😱😱😄
And a Ipad as dashboard, no thanks !

According to yours truly this must be one of the ugliest cars on Indonesian roads; the Hyundai Stargazer.

It operates in the Avanza/Ertiga/Xenia/Livina class and has 6 or 7 seats. Esp.the 6 seater is rather interesting for those who really want to use the 3rd row. The 2nd row has captain seats and you can step between them without moving the seats.

Anyway, there’s a new (facelifted) version, called the Cartenz. So then we have the Stargazer Cartenz X with an off-road sauce next to the existing Stargazers. Not sure if and when they will also get the facelift.

Before I forget; GIIAS 2025 started today.

This large car expo takes place in ICE in BSD. It ends on 3 August.

Sorry for the not so up-to-date overview but it takes a long time before numbers are collected and published in this country.

Rather surprisingly, the Toyota Innova has been the best seller in Indonesia, followed by the Avanza (which is no surprise). The latter has been dropping somewhat though.

After that, we see the Go/Grab cars Sigra, Calya and Honda Brio.

There were no Chinese companies in the car brands top 10 yet, but I know that as of April BYD , Cherry, Wuling and Denza have broken the ceiling. So it’s a matter of time before one of their models will appear in the list also.

This is an overview of 2025 so far. But it’s from a source I could not verify.
