Places to stay(Hotel), live music, and eat at in Jakarta

So I guess this is turning into a burger joint discussion...I'll jump in :)

One of the burgers I've had was Hard Rock's. Rp 95,000 plus tax...it wasn't cheap, but they had a credit card promo (It think it was buy one get one), so it was ok.

One that was good and inexpensive, was T-Grill at Epicentrum, but too bad the place is closed and looks like it's not a chain either since I haven't found any other T-grill in town.

Satu Lagi in the Kristal really does make a solid burger. Drinking there is getting crazy expensive and the bar stinks like a dirty ashtray, but the burgers are good.

I'm sorry, I have to step in :)

Three Buns is freaking delicious, full stop. Is it a bit expensive, especially for Indonesia? Yes it is but the quality of food, the setting and service do not compare to fatburger.

The bread is delicious, the meat is delicious, the sauce is delicious, the cheese is delicious and if all of this wasn't delicious enough, you get to add some freaking pork belly to any of their burgers!

Maybe they have improved, it has been about 18 months since I ate there, but at that time, my 2 friends and I all agreed it was mediocre at best and very over priced.

We head to Jakarta today and will be staying at Oasis Amir, I'll try to do a review when we get back

Nothing to say here....... except.... "FOR EMERGENCY USE ONLY"

Also, got out of Jakarta early and was hoping to post in the "Brag" thread about a new personal best time for Jakarta-Ciamis, but after making it to the Kertajati exit in under 2 hours we then had 3 separate traffic jams/detours to get around Independance day celebrations, which cost us about 3 hours :(

...and the grilled p*&k chop is a winner almost every time its ordered. (Not a paid endorsement)

maybe off topic.. but the very best french bread (bagette) you can get in jakarta is from PAPAYA on jalan melawai close to Amos hotel. freshly baked still warm if you time it right.

carrefour french bread is always a disappointment considering its a french chain should do better.

just saying

There is nothing left of Carrefour France in it, ukcouple. Carrefour has sold its 60% share to Chairul Tanjung's CT Corp 3 or 4 years ago. It's just merely a franchise now with no direct involvement of the french chain.

that explains it.

what a pity. Is nothing sacred anymore.?

Carrefour wanted to focus on their European operations. More and more Indonesian Carrefour hypermarts are being converted into TransMarts btw; the concept is one stop shopping just like a mall. So they add restaurants, coffee shops, banking services, kid's playgrounds and what not in the same complex.

And guess to which group those Wendy's, Coffee Beans, Bank Mega (10% discount in Carrefour with Mega credit card) etc. belong? Yes, the same Trans Corp.

It's always interesting to see how different people can have so diverse experiences on dining etc.

The earlier mentioned Abuba and Holy Cow! for me are terrible. Really, I'd rather go to Outback then. Carnivor is not that bad either. The pork knuckles in those 'German' places are deep fried! Not even roasted/grilled/broiled.

And you can not really compare a 3 Buns to a Fatburger. The latter is a glorified version of Carls Jr. or so; it's fast food. And the other is more of a Hard Rock / SoHo from an ambiance and offerings perspective and a 'real' restaurant. There is a nice burger place on the Kelapa Gading Boulevard called Bun N Bite; they try to make the burger & shakes place a bit fifties style. The good thing is you can select all your ingredients and toppings from scratch and make your own creations. (And they have beer.) The Green Door Kitchen is pretty good too. (Their burgers that is, I wouldn't touch their ham sandwiches.) In the outside area of MKG there is a shed called OLAH burgerbar good for a quick bite. If you're there and would like to sit outside; the Ikkudo Ichi ramen place is also quite nice, they serve even ramen with pork cheeks!

Btw, I don't get the hyping of 5 Guys at the east coast; the places look like a McD or Chinese supermarket, they are amazingly expensive and they practically have no selection besides a simple grilled burger. Give me an In-N-Out anytime.

It is a bit of a weird place; an even more Indonesian interpretation of the German cuisine. But much cheaper than those Paulaner etc. and the taste is not so bad.

Abuba - never had a good steak, not even for the price they charge. Not even for half of what hey charge.
Holycow - when I get the steaks larger than 200 grams, it's worth the price they charge for it. (around $10, I think you get a $10 piece of steak for $10)

Baconerie - pretty good burger

On my recent rips to Jakarta I've stayed on or near Jl Mangga Besar in N Jakarta, either at the Amaris there or Jayakarta nearby. I really like eating in the stalls that line the street in the evening, something with tempe and pete for me and seafood for the gf.. Lots of choice, cheap and better on average than Jl. Subang.

There are different types of cafes nearby, plus a range of bars including some real throwbacks to, what is fast becoming, a bygone age. There's even a few bars on the street selling bottled beer at v.reasonable prices (mind you a close inspection of the bottled stout revealed it was well past its expiry date).

During the day you can pick-up an English language newspaper, go shopping, get a haircut and pick-up some royal (fried, fermented singkong) all within a stones throw of the hotel.

For travelling further afield, there's a TJ busway at the end of the street :brushteeth: what more could one want ?

5 Guys is not just a east coast thing.

Yes, the burgers are not cheap, but they are mighty tasty. I like In-N-Out, but their small burgers and frys just don't compare.

I went to the (rather new) Flip Burger in Kelapa Gading.

Not great. The order and especially pickup area is very small and cramped and it took a long time to get the food. The place itself is rather big with multiple floors and has good seating areas.

The burgers (and esp. the sauce) are not bad but rather small and the fries and hash browns could have been much better. And the drink dispensing machine did not function properly.

Carl's Jr. moved from La Piazza to Mal Kelapa Gading btw. They still have their Friday deals (1+1).
