How to obtain Indonesian Citizenship

Yes you can't give up something if you don't have something to replace it.
It would be simultaneous. Get one and the other is cancelled. What if they reject your application? You are stateless and have to do a Viktor in The Terminal
Interestingly enough there is someone on Quora who claims he became stateless in the process of obtaining the Indonesian citizenship. But his past seems a bit strange, seems to have been involved in several things here. Anyway he still claims that it's near impossible to become a citizen. Sadly I forgot his name, maybe I'll come across it again.
Anyway.. it's clearly possible to become a citizen and the chance of being stateless is rather small or even nonexistent these days.

Technically if you're American you can become stateless as they don't require you to have a new nationality to renounce, technically. But up until recently the price was like $2350 just to lose your citizenship. They're supposed to change it to $450 this year but iono as they want that money, and have been known to deny renunciation based on assuming people want to keep American citizenship (at least from what I've been reading online the last 8 or so years 😅)

Guys, at the risk of sounding snippy- this is an important thread to people who want helpful information around getting Indonesian citizenship and it is in the part of the forum that is kinda a crap free zone... people wanting help have dozens of pages to sift through as it is without it being filled with worthless trivia.

Numerous posts deleted. Thanks BA.

What will happen is:
You retain your original citizenship until it is renounced and even if Indonesia has given you the citizenship document, it is on the condition that your original citizenship is renounced- if you do not renounce your original citizenship, then your Indonesian status will be null & void.
This translates as: all the time and money spent on gaining Indonesian citizenship will be lost and the original citizenship will still stand.

I do not know the specific timelines. I do know that the UK took months to officially renounce mine but the fact that it was in process was good enough. This is because once the documentation (passport & forms) & payment are sent in, the wheels of bureaucracy begin turning and they cannot be stopped.
So I would suggest that, although there is no specified timeline for this, legally it is in your interests to have the process instigated promptly. That way, should any officials come knocking/checking you can show that your renouncement of original citizenship in in motion.
Thank you so much 🙏

What document did you get from the British government to prove you had renounced your citizenship? Or did they communicate directly with the Indonesians?

From who to what? Can you be more specific?

You are from where? You want to become Indonesian? How?
I live here 13 years (with Kitas/Kitap) married with Indonesian man, so I hope I can become WNI. Now I'm preparing my documents for apply to Indonesian citizenship but some things still not clear for me so I'm trying to understand all this process step by step before I try to start it.

I have a pdf of the letter but I cannot upload it as too large, sorry.
This is what they wrote:
This is to certify that the British Embassy at Jakarta has no objection to [name] of British national passport [number] issued by IPS on [date] making an application to obtain the Republic of Indonesia citizenship...
[name] may apply for a Declaration of Renunciation of British National citizenship after he [yep- I wanted to comment about them changing my gender - but decided wasn't worth the hassle] obtains the Republic of Indonesia Citizenship.

It was on official embassy paper and stamped and signed.
Can you please tell the name of this letter in Indonesian language? If I understood right every embassy give this letter in 2 languages (country of origin and Indonesian)? So Indonesian part of this document probably is the same in all embassies? My native language is not English so I'm not sure how to ask about this letter in my embassy (because don't know how to call it in my language) but really hope they will understand if I tell them the Indonesian name of this letter. Btw my country of origin allows 2 or more citizenships that's why I was really confused what kind of letter should I take from embassy, but information in your posts very helpful, thank you so much for sharing

Try this:
Surat Keterangan Kehilangan Kewarganegaraan

letter of renunciation of citizenship
lettre/déclaration de renonciation à la citoyenneté
declaración de renuncia a la ciudadanía
δήλωση παραίτησης της ιθαγένειας
시민권 포기 편지
بيان التنازل عن الجنسية
pahayag ng pagtalikod sa pagkamamamayan
नागरिकता त्यागने का बयान
etc.
etc.

Good Question- They did communicate directly with me. I actually got a package with my cancelled passport in it. I can't find the letter that came with it (the hubby does the filing), but it might have been an email. & I have to go out now so no time to hunt.

But Indonesia doesn't allow it. After age 18
Cannot hold dual citizenship if one is Indonesian

Here is the email I got from the embassy:

Well noted in regards to your intention to apply for an Indonesian citizenship. Please be informed that at the first stage of your application, we are able to issue you with the letter of no objection stating that we do not have any objections for you to apply for the Indonesian citizenship. You will need to come to us in person to apply for such document by bringing your original British passport and the supporting documents (if any) e.g. letter from Immigration and etc. This letter should be submitted when you make an application for the citizenship.

At the second stage, when you have already obtained the Indonesian citizenship, you will be required to get the letter from us to state that you have cancelled your passport with us and that you will renounce your British citizenship. You will still need to come to us for this document and you will be required to present the original of your passport and the certificate of citizenship from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. Once you have done all of this, you can make an application to renounce your British citizenship with the Home Office in the UK.
The fee for each letter is £50 by Visa or Master debit/credit card. The payment will be made on your visit.

The above process should not be taken as definite depending on the authorities on your area. Some have come to us only to apply for the second letter when they have been given the citizenship. Therefore, grateful if you could confirm of where you are in the process of applying the Indonesian citizenship. You can check with the authorities first to make sure about the letter before you can come to us.

Please advise should you like to apply for the letter from us.

Best regards,

Thank you very much, just confused the name "surat keterangan kehilangan kewarganegaraan" correctly or not in the case if country of origin allows 2 citizenships so no automatically renouncing original citizenship (need apply for renouncing and required to have another citizenship already)? Is "surat keterangan kehilangan kewarganegaraan" the same as "letter of no objection"? Or "kehilangan kewarganegaraan " means automatically renouncing?

Thank you so much, is "The Letter of No Objection" the same as "Surat keterangan kehilangan kewarganegaraan" or that's two different kinds of documents? Seems like my embassy can give "letter of no objection" but not sure about "kehilangan kewarganegaraan" if it means they must guarantee my original citizenship will loose automatically after get Indonesian (but it won't loose automatically, process of renouncing will start only after apply and pay for renouncing+ must already have another citizenship for make sure after renouncing won't become stateless).

I know it, thank you, I just confused what exactly letter should I ask from my embassy because my original citizenship won't loose automatically if I get Indonesian citizenship so I worry if my embassy can't give "surat keterangan kehilangan kewarganegaraan" because kewarganegaraan can be renounce only after citizen apply for it but not automatically like in countries which don't allow 2 citizenships

Cannot hold dual citizenship if one is Indonesian

Incorrect!
The cut-off date for choosing citizenship is your 21st birthday. You can make the decision on which citizenship to give up any time between your 18th birthday and your 21st birthday.
Reference: Law no.12 from 2006, article 6 (3):
Pernyataan untuk memilih kewarganegaraan
sebagaimana dimaksud pada ayat (2) disampaikan dalam
waktu paling lambat 3 (tiga) tahun setelah anak berusia
18 (delapan belas) tahun atau sudah kawin.

I suggest you speak with the government department of the country you are from- I cannot advise you on their procedures because I do not know what country you are from BUT I doubt very much any country that permits dual citizenship will automatically renounce YOU if you get another citizenship.
It just doesn't work that way.
I think you are mistranslating or looking at the wording in the wrong way. I am pretty sure that if you were to say what country you are from someone in here will be able to help with where you should look or translations.

Did they require an additional letter or document, or did the letter provided by the consulate as above fulfil the requirements for obtaining the Naturalization Certificate from the Indonesian government?
