Just watched a news report. Massive problems and especially with chaos at airports. I am booked for flights from Bali to Melbourne with a stopover and changing airlines in Perth next Friday. Fingers crossed that this sorts quickly but first leg is with Air Asia which has an appalling record for delays and cancellations at the best of time. The joys of travel.

Banks are also experiencing problems. My bank has already sent me a message that money transactions have been delayed.

It most likely will be fixed by then.

The problem is coming from a security software for large corporations by a company called Crowdstrike. They pushed an update which made windows systems (so PCs and Servers) using this program to crash. Unfortunately, because they cannot be booted, it's not possible for Crowdstrike to push a fix over the internet.

For now, the workaround is for a tech to get physical access (or remotely instruct someone with physical access) to start the computer in safe mode, access a specific file from the Crowdstrike software, and delete it. Then restart and voilà.

Considering there are millions of computers that currently don't start, I guess it's gonna take a little while but I don't imagine it will take longer than the weekend.

I spoke with someone yesterday, that says the entire banking, government corruption, basically the entire system, is going to collapse. And that it was going to be a better world afterwords. I said if there is no commerce, then how are we going to eat, build houses, have schools, etc? She didn't have an answer for that.
I like the idea of getting rid of corrupt governments, corporations, and having a more fair balanced world for everyone, but I am skeptical of that ever happening. It seems like a dream to me.

Of course the same is true for electricity and even water. Our company’s credo was always that (systems and) the network should always be available as basic commodities.

The problem is that nowadays EVERYTHING depends on IT, often without alternative method
One day this will bite us in the ass....
Yep, we got way too dependend on digital. I agree that it will bite us in the ass big time and probably more than once.
It's also funny that when I go to shopping here at the supermarkets payment with all the swiping and scanning and cashless stuff, the waiting times are still a lot longer than when you still pay cash at the local wet market. And they even have to cut your meat and fish and whatnot and are still faster than your averaged cashier here.;)

In the Western world lot of systems were affected. What about the systems in China, Korea, Japan ... ? Do these systems use Windows? Crowdstrike security software?

Yes, Japan got affected too. Mizuho bank went down for instance. Korea presumably was affected too. China did not, due to the way they handle their own stuff and obviously not keen on using American security software.
